Testing A Compressor

There are 2 main ways that an air conditioning's compressor unit can fail. Learning these is one of the first steps to being able to successfully troubleshoot a failed ac system. The two ways are: Electrical failure and Mechanical Failure. So naturally the next question is how you determine which system caused the compressor failure. Well, to do so you will need learn how to test the system specifically for each type of failure. An electrical failure will generally be the result of a short or some other wiring problem. Here is a great video that can help you learn the basics of diagnosing a compressor failure.
